Paulo Bento appointed as Portugal manager

Paulo Bento, 41, replaces Carlos Queiroz, whose contract was terminated following two suspensions over allegations of verbally abusing anti-doping officials.
According to a note on FPF’s website, Bento’s contract will run through until July 2012.Also appointed were assistant coach Leonel Pontes, trainer João Aroso and goalkeeper coach Ricardo Peres, all of whom worked with Bento during his four year-stint at Sporting.
Paulo Bento’s former experience as a coach consists uniquely of his time at the Lisbon club in which his team was consistently placed second in Portugal’s league behind FC Porto.
He was sacked in 2009 after a spell of poor results.
Paulo Bento played for both Benfica and Sporting and was also a regular in the Portuguese national football team during the late 90s and the beginning of the new millennium.
Bento’s hiring comes after a failed FPF attempt to recruit Real Madrid manager José Mourinho for a two-game contract. The Spanish club denied Mourinho permission to take a temporary job with the Portugal national team.
Bento’s first matches will be Euro 2012 qualifiers at home to Denmark and away to Iceland, on October 8 and 12.
